Completed in December 2009, the $200 million, 124,000-square-foot expansion of Miller Children’s Hospital transformed pediatric care on the Long Beach Memorial Hospital campus. Designed by Taylor, the project expanded surgical services, added inpatient pediatric beds, NICU and radiology facilities, and established a prominent new identity for the hospital’s growing pediatric programs. As Design Leader, Ms. Mabus (Ms. Hanley) guided the architectural vision from concept through design development, helping create an environment where advanced medical care and compassionate healing work together to support children and their families.
Prominently located along Atlantic Boulevard, the building was envisioned as a welcoming landmark that reflects the optimism and resilience of childhood. Its shimmering blue-green metal façade captures the changing colors of the sky and water, creating a dynamic presence that evolves throughout the day. Landscaped gardens and outdoor spaces extend the healing experience beyond the building itself, providing patients, families, and visitors with moments of comfort, discovery, and connection before they even enter the hospital.
As Design Leader, Ms. Mabus (Ms. Hanley) was responsible for establishing the project’s architectural vision and ensuring its successful integration throughout the design process. She led the multidisciplinary design team through schematic design and design development, maintaining design excellence while balancing the complex functional requirements of a major pediatric healthcare facility. Her leadership helped shape an environment that is both highly efficient for caregivers and uplifting for the children and families it serves.
